The best cold weather accessories for babies and toddlers

winter baby

I live in southeastern Michigan so having clothes and accessories that are well suited for a cold and sometimes brutal winter is a must. Dressing a newborn in the winter was fairly easy because he couldn’t escape me or pull hats or mittens off yet but I still had my go to pieces, especially for leaving the house. Toddler life has been much different. There are boots, snowsuits, and tantrums at play so finding things that are easy to get on, stay on, and keep him warm has been quite the adventure of trial and error. Listed below are my absolute favorite cold weather accessories for babies and toddlers.

1: Car Seat Cover

I loved that it was easy to attach to our car seat, easy to detach when I wanted to wash it and the fabric was super soft and cozy for our little guy. I had read before about people just using a blanket but when its 10 degrees and windy out, I’m not messing around with blanket, I want something secure.

2: The Cutest Little Bear Suit

When my son got to be around 8 or 9 months old, it was cold outside but he was at an age where if we were going to the grocery store for instance, he wouldn’t be staying all snuggled up in the Eddie Bauer car seat cover, I would carry him into a store and then he’d be sitting up in the shopping cart. Here’s the thing, for safety reasons, babies aren’t supposed to wearing big bulky winter coats in their car seats so I wanted to find something warm enough to go from the car to the store but was also safe for being in his car seat.

This checked all my boxes and is so freaking cute that I bought a second one this year. Side note-SIZE UP. It will look huge when you get it but trust me, you’ll want that. My FAVORITE FEATURES are that the hood fits snug (but not tight) so his precious ears are covered, and that the hands AND feet can be tucked inside it! That’s right,YOU DON’T HAVE TO PUT MITTENS ON YOUR TODDLER! Rejoice mama!

3: Double Zip Snow Suit

The design of this thing is brilliant. The double zipper makes it SO easy to get on and off and there’s a little piece of fabric that covers the top of the zipper so it won’t jab your little one in the chin.

4: Velcro Booties

These are PERFECT for car rides or new walkers (indoors only). They are incredibly light and so so easy to get on and off. I especially loved them for my little guy because he has such wide chubby feet and most infant shoes I found are on the narrow side.

5: Aden and Anais Snuggle Knit

My only complaint about this product is that it doesn’t come in bigger sizes. The biggest I’ve seen is 9 months and I’m 5’4 so that just won’t do. I’d love to tell you I’m kidding but seriously, the name does not lie, you will not be able to stop snuggling your baby in this magical fabric. They come in a few different varieties and they’re perfect for cold weather snuggles.

On really cold days, I’ve combined 2 and 3. I know what you’re thinking…Shereena, why do you live in such a cold climate? Or better yet…why go outside?! I have the most amazing family and this is where they are so I’m making the most of the fact that I live in a place where we think mid to high 30’s means its “warming up” and the way I make the most of it is by dressing my son in the cutest and most snuggly gear available. I’ll also be checking flights to Florida in about 5 minutes.
