I heard and read so many stories about night time diaper leaks when I was pregnant/a new mom. Tips about layering sheets and mattress covers like lasagna to help with changing bedding in the middle of the night were a dime a dozen.
Thankfully, I never had any issues with diaper leaks until my son was more than a year old but by then I thought I had heard every trick in the book so I was good to go right? Wrong. We had diaper leaks, sometimes 2, EVERY SINGLE NIGHT. Until, I started implementing the 3 step system we still use now. Since then, my little guy has been sleeping soundly on his clean dry sheets.
You read that right…. NO MORE LEAKY DIAPERS! NOT ONE!
Here are the 3 things I use every night to stop night time diaper leaks…
Step 1: Huggies Nighttime Diapers
Full disclosure, I haven’t tried every brand out there but these had great ratings so I went with them. When used alone, we still had leaks in the beginning but it was also a time when my son was still taking a bottle so there was a lot of liquids being consumed all day and night. But I still liked how sturdy they felt so I sized up and added step 2.
Step 2: Sposie Overnight Diaper Booster Pads
There’s a little trick to these bad boys, not a trick trick but there is a right way for sure. One side has a seam which needs to touch the diaper, not your baby. But also you’ll notice that the “padding” extends to the very edge at one end but not quite to the edge on the other end. The end that has the padding all the way to the edge needs to be in the front. For a while I just tossed it in there without paying attention to which end was at the front or back. These, paired with the nighttime diaper worked great for a while but eventually the leaks returned so I added step 3.
Step 3: Diaper Cover
Here it is folks, my HOLY GRAIL of eliminating diaper leaks. At first I thought I’d take it off my son in the morning and find that it was keeping puddles of pee from leaking out. Nope. Not how it works. That honestly didn’t happen even one time. My son wasn’t peeing too much, the diaper gets bunched up from him traveling the entire length of the bed sideways all night!
The diaper cover keeps the diaper in place which I’m so happy to say has COMPLETELY ELIMINATED THE NEED TO CHANGE SHEETS OR PAJAMAS IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT! I’ve been noticing lately that his diaper doesn’t seem as full in the morning so I’ve started to take away step 2 and just use the night time diaper and diaper cover and so far so good!
Is the idea of layering sheets and mattress covers pretty darn brilliant? Yes, absolutely. However, it’s been a real treat to not need it since switching to this 3 step process. We could all use a better nights sleep, hopefully this helps get you yours.
